Interview Continued: Amy “What do you like most about what you do?” Clayton “I especially like the high degree of local control over contrast and density within the image. I feel more fulfilled artistically, and more energized about the work, than I ever was in the darkroom. I also love the look of carbon ink prints. It's a completely new medium and it's gorgeous.” Amy “What do you like the least?” Clayton “There is still room for improvement in the printer/ink/software systems in the way color inks are blended to produce black and white tones.” Amy “What do you like most about Hawk Mountain Papers?” Clayton “Hawk Mountain” has a unique selection of fine papers, three of which are on my favorites list. Peregrine Smooth, (Velvet) in particular has some unique qualities which I love and are unlike any other paper I've tested.” Amy “What do you like the least about Hawk Mountain Papers?” Clayton “There have on a few occasions been significant differences in papers among different production batches. But this has been the exception, not the rule.”* Hawk Mountain hires multiple judges from various areas of expertise to judge our yearly print contests and we were delighted to hear the unanimous decision to award the grand prize to Clayton. He has been a loyal, approachable, candid customer for many years. When I asked him if he knew he had an award winning print in “Sheila and Julian” he said, “I've done portraiture for many years and I knew this was an exceptional image.
